On May 20th Prof. Yves Gingras has delivered a “New Areas for Use of Bibliometric Methods” at the HSE. The event has been organized by the Research Laboratory of Science and Technology Studies, HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge.
Yves Gingras is Professor in the Department of History at the University of Quebec in Montreal, former Director of the Interuniversity Research Center on Science and Technology (CIRST), Scientific Director of the Observatory of Science and Technology (OST), and Canada Research Chair in History and Sociology of Science.
In the framework of the workshop Yves Gingras considered ways of using bibliometric data in studies of new and emerging areas of knowledge and Foresight research. The professor talked about methods for detecting research and technology fronts by the means of two approaches: qualitative, based on expert assessments, and quantitative, which presumes measuring changes in a given indicator.
The main sources of data for the evaluation of scientific activities are research papers, citations, keywords, etc. The analysis of technological innovation is based upon statistics of patents and their citations, inter-patent citations and keywords.
The lecturer provided an overview of existing bibliometric databases and analysed limitations inherent to them.
