Workshop “Principles of Industrial Statistics and UNIDO Approaches to Classifying Industry Sectors by Technology Intensity” by Shyam Upadhyaya

On June 22, 2011 the Research Laboratory of Science and Technology Studies, HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK), has organized an open workshop by Shyam Upadhyaya “Principles of Industrial Statistics and UNIDO Approaches to Classifying Industry Sectors by Technology Intensity”.

On June 22, 2011 the Research Laboratory of Science and Technology Studies, HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK), has organized an open workshop by Shyam Upadhyaya “Principles of Industrial Statistics and UNIDO Approaches to Classifying Industry Sectors by Technology Intensity”.

Shyam Upadhyaya is the Chief Statistician of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Introducing Shyam Upadhyaya, Alexander Sokolov, Deputy Director of HSE ISSEK, highlighted the speaker's high professional skills as well as the longstanding fruitful cooperation  including international projects, particularly "Development of Methodologies of ICT Statistics for Russia: Implementation of International Standards", implemented by the HSE under support from the European Commission and UNIDO.

In his speech, Shyam Upadhyaya told about the UNIDO Statistics' activity, examined issues related to using the new edition of the International Standard Classification of Economic Activities (ISIC rev.4), focusing on principles and approaches used by UNIDO for the  classification of industries by the level of research intensity. He also presented the results of statistical analysis and ranking of industries by energy consumption intensity as well as the rating of  countries by the CompetitiveIndustrial Performance Index (CIP).

Responding to the audience's questions, the speaker has considered in detail the problems encountered in interpreting the results of rating by the CIP, assessed the feasibility of applying indicators of high-level aggregation.

In conclusion, Shyam Upadhyaya noted the possibility of the HSE students' participation in training programs of UNIDO (Internship programme).
